Methods : Related literature published between 2002 and 2011 was identified by searching the Igaku Chuo Zasshi database using the following keywords : \"understanding the elderly\", \"views on aging\", \"images of the elderly\" and \"ageism\". Descriptive statistics and content analysis were then performed on the resulting selections. Results : A total of 77 documents were selected for analysis, 45.5% of which were chosen for qualitative research. The following six categories were extracted from the data : (1) Evaluation of experiential learning related to the physical traits and psychological peculiarities of the elderly ; (2) Evaluation of learning about the elderly based on assessments of course content and teaching methods ; (3) Evaluation of learning based on interaction with the elderly ; (4) Evaluation and effectiveness of current gerontological nursing education to provide an understanding of the elderly ; (5) Evaluation and effectiveness of current gerontological nursing education to provide an understanding of longitudinal changes experienced by the elderly ; and (6) How the individual characteristics of students are related to understanding of the elderly.
