Methods: To search the related literature between 2000 and 2004, a computer data base, Igaku Chuou Zasshi, was used with the key words, \"assessment\", \"education\", and \"nursing\". A total of 33 papers were selected for the study sample and were analyzed using Berelson's content analysis method. Results: Of all researchers, 78.8% were university faculty members. A total of 9 categories were extracted from the data, including (1) the conditions of goal attainment by nursing students regarding physical assessment techniques, and (2) the educational effect of using physical assessment techniques in a nursing clinical practicum course. Conclusions: The results suggest the following themes for future research: (1) the collection of qualitative research data on physical assessment techniques used in basic nursing education, and (2) the relationships with the educational effects of the lectures, nursing skills laboratories and nursing clinical practicum
