The\nquestionnaire was mailed to 1,923 staff nurses working in 89 hospitals throughout Japan who agreed to participate in this study. The content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed in a pilot study. Of the 975 questionnaires returned (50.7%), 502 valid responses were analyzed using qualitative analysis in nursing education based on Berelson’s content\nanalysis method.\nResults: The analysis identified 39 categories representing the learning needs of hospital staff nurses. These 39 categories included: (a) knowledge pertaining to diseases and their diagnosis and treatment that forms the basis of daily nursing practice; (b) knowledge and skills necessary to prevent infection; (c) knowledge and skills necessary in disaster nursing; and (d) outpatient nursing.
